Research

I’m currently working on a dissertation about the history of birth certificates and compulsory birth registration in the United States, to be completed in 2012. Selected portions of my research are available at my Talks page.

My master’s thesis, “‘In Los Alamos, I feel like I’m a real citizen’: Black atomic scientists, education, and citizenship, 1945-1960,” was completed in 2005. My advisor for this project was Jacqueline Jones; my second reader was Claudia Castañeda. It’s available in PDF under a Creative Commons License at the link above. You can see pictures of some of the scientists at this blog post.

    Hi Shane,
I’m currently doing some research on two black chemists, Sherman Carter and Harold Evans, who you mentioned in your thesis. I was wondering if you came across any information on either of them besides what you cited from Sammons’ book and Ebony magazine. Any information you have would be extremely helpful; I’m writing biographies on the two men for the website blackpast.org.

Also, I had been having troubles finding the Ebony magazine article that you used as it is incorrectly cited in the Sammons book; I am very grateful that you cited it in your work as I am now able to use it!
Thank you very much for any help you are able to give me as well as for your thesis, it is a very interesting topic to read about.
